Renato delivers lectures in veterinary anatomy, histology, physiology, and pre-clinical sciences to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine (BVetMed), Graduate (Accelerated) BVetMed, Gateway, BSc Biological, and BSc Bioveterinary Sciences programmes.
Renato is a veterinary surgeon and researcher with a passion for science, animals and teaching. He completed his studies in Veterinary Medicine at the Universidade de Évora, Portugal, in an integrated master's degree format. He obtained his PhD in Biomedical Sciences from the Freie Universität Berlin, Germany, where he also was an affiliated researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Infection Biology. In the last year of his PhD, Renato received the prize for Outstanding International PhD Student from the German institution DAAD (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst).
In 2021, Renato and the RVC Anatomy Team received the Inaugural Education Innovation Award from the Anatomical Society for the work entitled 'The Canine Wiki Abdomen Dissection', an innovative and collaborative tool to promote the learning of practical veterinary anatomy amid the Covid-19 pandemic restrictions.
In September 2023, Renato received the James Bee Student-led Educator Award in the category of 'Outstanding Teacher' at the RVC.
Renato is an external examiner for other veterinary schools in the UK. He is also an active Member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, Member of the Royal Society of Biology, Full Member of the Anatomical Society, and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
Renato has a genuine interest in veterinary anatomy, physiology, cell biology, and pedagogy. His main life-science-related research topic interests involve cellular biology, gastroenterology, microbiology and oncogenesis. In the field of veterinary anatomy education, his research interests are within the development of new strategies to promote equality, diversity, and inclusiveness of students in the veterinary profession, the development of the veterinary professional identity, the creation of new forms of assessments, and integration of different areas of the academic curricula.
