The first meeting of a new UK-Nigeria One Health Antimicrobial Resistance Interest group was held online in December. Founded by Dr Lucy Brunton (RVC & WOAH CC RAM) and Dr Akinbowale Jenkins (University of Nottingham), the overarching objectives of this interest group are to encourage evidence-based research outcomes in policy development and promote collaborative research between researchers in the UK and Nigeria.

The group includes researchers and policy makers from UK and Nigerian academic institutions, government institutions and international NGOs.

At the inaugural meeting in December 2022, four objectives were agreed by the group. These focused on research, capacity building, training and communication and advocacy.

A key activity of the meeting was to identify potential drivers of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in the veterinary and human health spheres in Nigeria. Several important drivers were considered by the group, and further work is ongoing to rank these drivers and assess the existing evidence on their influence on AMR to support future action.
