The Royal Veterinary College’s (RVC) Professor Ross Bond, Professor of Veterinary Dermatology, and Dr Rosanne Jepson, Associate Professor of Small Animal Internal Medicine have been announced as the winners of two British Small Animal Veterinary Association (BSAVA) awards.

In a ceremony that took place on Thursday, 24^th March, Professor Bond was awarded the PetSavers Veterinary Achievement Award, which is presented to the first author of the most valuable full research paper published following a BSAVA PetSavers’ grant. Additionally, Dr Jepson received The Blaine Award for outstanding contributions to the advancement of small animal veterinary medicine or surgery.

Professor Bond, who holds both RCVS and European College Diplomas in Veterinary Dermatology, was recognised for his paper ‘Transverse sectioning in the evaluation of skin biopsy specimens from alopecic dogs’. The findings from this study will help provide additional diagnostic information, and fundamentally improve the assessment of skin samples from dogs with alopecia with no additional risk for the patient.

Dr Jepson, who is a recognised RCVS, ACVIM and ECVIM Specialist in Small Animal Internal Medicine, was awarded with The Blaine Award in celebration of her significant contribution to the development of small animal nephrology in the UK, which is one of her key areas of interest alongside urology and hypertension. As well as lecturing both nationally and internationally, Dr Jepson has an extensive publication record both in peer reviewed journals and as author of numerous textbook chapters.

Ross Bond, Professor of Veterinary Dermatology at the RVC, and recipient of The PetSavers Veterinary Achievement Award, said:

“I am very pleased to receive this award and would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the contribution of the co-authors on the study: Anke Hendricks, Janet Paterson-Kane, Kim Stevens and Harriet Brooks-Brownlie. My own association with BSAVA Petsavers stretches back to 1992 when their predecessor (Clinical Studies Trust Fund) kindly funded my PhD, and I have been most fortunate to have received a number of grants from them since.

“Petsavers funding fills an important niche, given their interest in work of direct relevance to veterinary practice. This study was a total blast to perform, and it is most rewarding that BSAVA Petsavers found it to be of value”.

Dr Rosanne Jepson, Associate Professor of Small Animal Internal Medicine at the RVC, and recipient of The Blaine Award, awarded by the BSAVA, said:

“I am delighted and deeply honoured to be the recipient of this year’s Blaine Award. I thank BSAVA and Royal Canin for their generosity and continued support for the advancement of small animal veterinary science. I would also like to thank my team at the RVC and internationally without whom it would not have been possible to make the advancements in nephrology and urology.”

The BSAVA Awards have been running for more than 60 years and embody the organisation’s strategic pillars – community and science – recognising sustained contributions to the veterinary profession across a wide range of areas. Winners of the awards received their prizes as part of this year’s BSAVA Congress which took place in Manchester Central on 24^th-26^th March.
