BVetMed with Integrated Foundation Year
The BVetMed with Integrated Foundation Year offers a direct pathway to the Royal Veterinary College’s internationally recognised veterinary degree. This integrated pathway represents one of the first veterinary foundation routes of its kind in the UK, designed specifically to address structural differences in international education systems of students from overseas.
This programme is designed for high-achieving international students whose education systems or school structures prevent them from studying both Biology and Chemistry at Advanced Level, which is normally required for direct entry to veterinary medicine. The programme integrates an additional preparatory year designed to equip you with the knowledge and skills you need to study veterinary medicine.
The course is primarily delivered at our Camden Campus, with some practical elements of the course undertaken at our Hawkshead Campus just outside London in Hertfordshire. The subsequent five years of the BVetMed degree are delivered at the Camden Campus, for the first two years, and at the Hawkshead Campus for the remaining three years.
Course overview
The BVetMed with Integrated Foundation Year bridges specific knowledge gaps and prepares students for the academic and professional demands of veterinary study. It is designed to support capable students whose educational pathways present structural constraints rather than academic limitations
Students who successfully complete the Foundation Year will progress to the five-year Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine (BVetMed) programme.
The curriculum is aligned with BVetMed teaching and assessment ensuring a smooth transition into Year One of our BVetMed course.
The BVetMed programme at the Royal Veterinary College provides world-leading scientific and clinical training in veterinary medicine and leads to a globally recognised veterinary qualification.
The programme combines scientific study, clinical training and practical experience, preparing graduates to diagnose disease, treat animals and promote animal health and welfare.
Students study the biological principles of normal body function and disease, learn how to distinguish healthy from pathological states, and develop the skills needed to prevent disease and manage animal production systems.

Your experience does not need to be extensive or come from formal placements, as the Integrated Foundation Year will help you develop your understanding of animals, husbandry, handling, welfare, and veterinary practice while preparing academically for entry to the BVetMed programme. Before applying, you should take steps to build a genuine understanding of animals and their care. This could include recent interactions with, or care of, animals that show you are comfortable working with them and have explored your interest in veterinary or animal-related careers. While caring for pets is common, your experience should go beyond routine ownership and involve active engagement in animal care or animal-focused environments. As part of the selection process, you will be asked to provide official references to confirm the experience you have listed in your application. We appreciate that opportunities differ between applicants. Most applicants should be able to demonstrate some meaningful exposure to animals when they apply. If your experience is limited or falls outside the usual two-year window, we still encourage you to apply, and you may receive an offer that requires you to complete further animal-related experience before enrolling. All applicants applying through UCAS must complete the Applicant Supplementary Form. The form will be available in our application portal and applicants will be given access to this, and notified of the need to complete the form, via email on receipt of their application. The form must be submitted independently of, and in addition to, the UCAS application and within five days of your application being received by the RVC. The RVC will not contact applicants reminding them to submit the form before the deadline given. The RVC uses email as the primary method for contacting applicants about their application. Emails may be sent from either admissions@rvc.ac.uk or myapplication@rvc.ac.uk and applicants are strongly encouraged to take the necessary steps to ensure emails from these addresses do not end up in spam or junk inboxes, as the RVC cannot accept responsibility for any applications that are unsuccessful as a result of missed information or deadlines. If your country is not listed on our Entry Requirements please contact us at admissions@rvc.ac.uk so that we can consider whether we can accept your qualification for entry to the Integrated Foundation Year.
My country is listed, but I have completed a different qualification – will you accept it?
If your qualification is not listed on our Entry Requirements please contact us at admissions@rvc.ac.uk so that we can consider whether we can accept your qualification for entry to the Integrated Foundation Year.
I am completing a qualification that you accept for Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine but my grades don’t meet those requirements – can I apply for the Integrated Foundation Year?
No, the Integrated Foundation Year is for applicants who are, or have, studied in a setting that does not enable them to meet the entry requirements for our Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine course. The course is open to those students who have achieved highly in the system they are studying in, to provide a pathway to studying veterinary medicine that would not otherwise be available to them in the UK.
My results are lower than your entry requirements – can I still apply?
The majority of our applicants will meet our advertised requirements, however we do still encourage you to contact us at admissions@rvc.ac.uk in order for us to confirm whether or not we could accept results at the level you have achieved.
My IELTs results are older than 2 years – can I still apply?
You are welcome to apply however please be aware that you will be required to completed a new IELTs as a condition of your offer if your application is successful.
Will I need to apply to Veterinary Medicine once I have completed the Integrated Foundation Year?
No, as long as you successfully complete the Foundation Year, you will progress normally to Year 1 of the Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine degree.
Can I apply to other universities after I have completed the Integrated Foundation Year?
No, as this is an integrated programme it will not meet the entry requirements for other degree programmes.
Can I bring dependents to the UK with me if I study this course?
No, student visas for study at this level do not allow students to also bring dependents.
I’d like to apply but the Home Office have applied a visa brake to my country – can you still consider my application?
The UK Government have currently applied a visa brake to student visas to students from Cameroon, Afghanistan, Sudan and Myanmar. There is no current end date available for this brake and as such we will not be able to issue Confirmation of Acceptance to Study to applicants from these countries until further notice. We would recommend waiting until this has passed prior to submitting an application.
I am an internationally qualified vet but want to practice in the UK, can I apply to the Integrated Foundation Year?
No, we do not accept applications from internationally trained vets, or applicants who have previously attended vet school for this programme. If you are interested in practicing the UK please go to the RCVS website to find out more - link is https://www.rcvs.org.uk/veterinary-professionals/registration/join-the-register-of-veterinary-surgeons
