What is equine laser therapy?

We use specific red and near- infrared laser light wavelengths to generate a therapeutic effect on your horse/pony. The equipment we use is K-laser.

How does equine laser therapy work?

The laser energy stimulates increased circulation to the affected area – attracting more oxygen and nutrients which helps to create a more effective healing environment. At a cellular level, the rise in metabolic activity stimulates nutrient transportation across cell membranes to initiate increased production of cellular energy (ATP - Adenosine triphosphate).

Is the laser treatment process scientifically proven on horses?

Laser therapy has been used in both human and animal medicine since the 1970’s and this more powerful method has been applied successfully since 2000 – with multiple research studies demonstrating it’s effectiveness. 

Where can the K-laser treatment be applied to?

The laser treatment can be applied anywhere on the body surface, the only exception are tissues directly adjacent to and including the eyes themselves.

Does the treatment hurt?

Occasionally patients experience a mild tingling sensation. The areas being treated may be more sensitive initially before pain reduction is evident.

What does the treatment involve?

Normally there is no need for sedation or restraint. The equipment is mobile and therefore treatment can be done in your horse’s familiar surroundings which helps minimise stress. The treatment is usually pleasant and comforting to the horse.

How long does the equine laser treatment take?

This varies according to the condition and area being treated but will typically be 3-8 minutes per area.

How often will my horse have to be treated?

This varies according to the condition requiring treatment, we will devise a tailored treatment plan based on your horse’s clinical needs. A typical equine laser treatment schedule would be 6 treatments across a 3 week period followed up with single maintenance treatments for chronic conditions as required.

How long is it before we see results from the laser treatment?

Depending what is being treated, most patients show signs of better comfort and mobility 12-24 hours after the treatment. Some patients may need to have several sessions before positive improvements can be seen as the effects of the treatment are cumulative.

Are there any side effects or associated risks?

Very occasionally, old injuries or pain syndromes can be aggravated as the healing response is more active after treatments. Laser therapy has a well established track record of delivering positive outcomes which is why many veterinary professionals use it.

What does recovery from laser treatment look like?

Usually no recovery from the laser treatment is required but adherence to the prior rehabilitation programme set out by your veterinary surgeon should continue as directed. Stable rest and/or refraining from work/competition may be required for a few days following treatment as sometimes the healing response can aggravate the area, leading to mild discomfort.
