RVC Research ponies retire to Redwings Horse Sanctuary
A herd of native breed ponies has been kept at the RVC for the last 20 years and it has contributed greatly to advancing our knowledge of the pathogenesis of endocrinopathic laminitis, a painful and debilitating disease of the equine foot associated with endocrine (hormone) alterations. Work linked with this herd has resulted in more than twenty peer reviewed publications in this field.
With an average age of 18 years, the time had come for the current ponies to retire. We are extremely grateful to Redwings Horse Sanctuary which has offered the ponies a home for life at one of their centres.
