“I think managing your money can take a lot of practice and
everyone does it differently. I always separate my loan into a
savings account for rent and outgoings, so then I know how
much I have for food, socialising, transport, etc. This allows
me to set a weekly budget for the rest of term.
Being in close proximity to London is great, because lots
of the museums and the National Gallery have free entry,
which you should take advantage of. I have recently taken
up running, so I do a parkrun at Finsbury Park every week
which is free and only costs £5 on the train. The RVC
Triathlon and Athletics Society do great group runs every
week around London and Potters Bar. There are a lot of
events that are discounted for students in London, so using
websites like Student Beans can be useful.
I work as a Student Ambassador, which is flexible around
being on full-time placement at the QMHA, as you work as
much or as little as you need to. The course can be difficult
to balance with part-time work, due to the placements.
But it can be done. I’d recommend applying to part-time “When I started my BVetMed degree I thought there
work through the RVC, including the Student Ambassador was no way I could work as well as study, but I am now
scheme, working in the Buttery/Haxby or working in my final year and am still working, despite juggling
at the reception in the RVC gym. This can make my course and rotations too, so I’d say it’s definitely
balancing work and university much easier, possible to do. I work part-time at a local supermarket,
as you choose the shifts you want to do!” and they are really supportive in flexing my hours
depending on how busy I am with my course. I live in
JACK BACON shared accommodation close to Hawkshead Campus,
FdSc Veterinary Nursing with friends who I met in first year. In my third year I
joined the rowing team, having never rowed before.
I wish I’d have joined in first year!”
