The Bloomsbury SET
The Bloomsbury SET: A Knowledge Exchange platform connecting capability to combat the threat from infectious disease and antimicrobial resistance (AMR)
The Bloomsbury SET (Science, Economics, Technology) innovation partnership brought together HEIs with a strong reputation in creating enduring impact from their research. This £6.9 million programme, awarded through Research England’s Connecting Capability Fund, was led by The Royal Veterinary College, University of London.
The programme aimed to tackle the challenges of infectious disease, and the increasing resistance to antimicrobials that poses a major threat to human and animal health. The first phase of this translational research programme ran from April 2018 to June 2021 and focused on pump-priming projects for the development of new vaccines, diagnostic tools and addressing innovative approaches for data analysis and public health. A follow-on phase ran from July 2021 to September 2022 and created new opportunities for academics to partner with companies in support of product development. Additional Capacity Building activities targeted academics and university professional staff across the consortium and aimed to improve their knowledge and understanding of steps required to commercialise academic research and work with strategic partners. In addition, the wide range of events and reports produced helped with the development of innovative ideas, progressing research to higher Technology Readiness Levels and on the commercialisation route.
The programme allocated more than £5 million over 39 projects focusing on collaborative research and building on effective relationships between academia, industry and other relevant stakeholders.
