Tortoise Pre-Hibernation Health Checks
As the weather is turning cooler, your tortoise companion will be starting to slow down in preparation for hibernation. We recommend booking a pre hibernation check up with one of our exotic vets, before the wind down process starts
Why are tortoises’ pre-hibernation health checks necessary?
Your vet will conduct a full physical examination to ensure your tortoise is not showing any signs of illness that may prevent a healthy hibernation. Any tortoise which is underweight or suffering from an ailment should not be hibernated, but overwintered in indoor accommodation
Your vet will also discuss the hibernation process with you and will answer any questions you may have.
What is involved in a tortoise pre-hibernation check?
Your vet will conduct a full physical examination to ensure your tortoise is not showing any signs of illness that may prevent a healthy hibernation including nasal discharge, swelling of the eyes or limbs, any changes inside the mouth.
In some cases, a faecal parasite screen* will be advised, to ensure your tortoise does not have intestinal parasites prior to hibernation. If found in large numbers, these should be treated prior to the hibernation process.
Diagnostic imaging* may be recommended in some cases, if we suspect your tortoise is showing reproductive activity (if female), or if we suspect any underlying disease, which may put your tortoise at risk during the hibernation period.
How long does it take?
