Trauma accounts for 10% of the emergency admissions in veterinary medicine and some of them may require advanced diagnostics and treatment.

Our hospital is striving to offer a state-of-the-art treatment and therapies to all of our patients, including our traumatised pets. We are proud to provide a total care that encompasses a multidisciplinary approach involving specialists across different services available 365 days a year, 24/7.

The passion to deliver the best care possible to trauma patients has led to the creation of an international network of advanced veterinary hospitals that have been recognised and accredited as Veterinary Trauma Centres (VTCs) by the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care (ACVECC). The Queen Mother Hospital for Animals is currently the only recognised Level 1 Trauma Center in Europe and outside North America.

Upon arrival patients with significant injuries will be triaged by our Emergency Referral team and can be taken to our dedicated emergency room, where a team of Emergency vets and nurses will initiate immediate care to stabilise your pet. Within minutes of arrival, a dedicated Emergency clinician will assess your pet with the ability to run a number of in-house laboratory tests and perform a patient-side ultrasound to help evaluate the extent of injuries and initiate treatment as soon as possible. Our emergency team is supported by consulting clinicians across our Soft Tissue and Orthopaedic Surgery, Neurology and Neurosurgery, Ophthalmology and Anaesthesia and analgesia teams.

Patients with extensive injuries or life-threatening conditions can be anaesthetised and have advanced diagnostic imaging performed (such as CT or MRI scans) to aid understanding and decision making for surgical interventions by our specialist surgeons. This requires the coordination of many different specialist teams to plan the best course of action for each individual patient’s needs.

Our patients can be cared for by our specialist critical care team of nurses and vets, who have extensive experience with traumatic injuries and can offer the support they need to make a full recover. Our trauma patients can be supported by the use of the transfusion medicine service, advanced respiratory therapies and physiotherapy so that we are sure that every chance possible is give to your pet.
